This is a list of possible alternatives to Greenlight, all with different features and tradeoffs. It is supposed to be as impartial as possible. Contributions or corrections are welcome.
| Name | Notes |
|---|
| Polaris | Like Greenlight, Polaris is deployed in tandem with PowerDNS. No IPv6/AAAA or DNSSEC. Seemingly, if the main Polaris process goes down, DNS records will stop being served. Hasn’t had a new release since 2018. |
| rrdnsd | Has been in development for about the same length of time as Greenlight. Connects with many different DNS providers, so there’s no requirement to run your own DNS server(!). Seems easy to get started with. Basically only performs healthchecking, providing round robin behavior by returning multiple records to the client (does not provide more fine-grained behavior like Weighted Round Robin). Does not (yet) support IPv6/AAAA records. Reportedly can be horizontally scaled using a quorum protocol. |
| gdnsd | An interesting GSLB solution that is its own authoritative DNS server. Flexible plugin architecture. No DNSSEC. |
